Metabolic Syndrome Q&A

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that, when occurring together, increase your risk of a stroke, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

Examples of conditions that make up metabolic syndrome include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Excess body weight around your weight
  • High cholesterol levels
  • High blood sugar

These medical issues are often reversible by adopting healthy habits, including altering your diet and exercise regimens.

What increases my risk of metabolic syndrome?

Things that typically increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome, and therefore chronic diseases and their complications, include:

  • Having an apple-shaped body (larger waist circumference)
  • Overweight
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Poor dietary choices
  • Insulin resistance
  • Older age
  • Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
  • Family history of Type 2 diabetes
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Sleep apnea

Call the SlimWell office if you have metabolic syndrome risk factors or you simply want to lose weight to reduce your risk of developing medical problems.

Does metabolic syndrome cause any symptoms?

A main sign of metabolic syndrome is carrying excess weight around the midsection. However, most disorders linked to metabolic syndrome have no obvious symptoms. If you develop diabetes, you might experience increased urination, excessive thirst, blurred vision, or fatigue.

When not addressed, metabolic syndrome can lead to Type 2 diabetes as well as heart or blood vessel diseases.

How can I reverse metabolic syndrome?

A commitment to weight loss and a healthier lifestyle may reverse metabolic syndrome or prevent you from developing it altogether. Dr. Gota completes a body mass index (BMI) assessment and cardiovascular risk assessment. She discusses your symptoms, lifestyle, medications, medical history, and health and weight goals.

You might need blood work to screen for high blood sugar, high cholesterol, nutrient deficiencies, and hormone imbalances.

Your personalized weight-loss plan may include diet and exercise changes, weight-loss medications (if needed), meal replacements, other dietary supplements, and behavior-change counseling.

Aim to complete at least 30 minutes of exercise most days. Increase your fruit, vegetable, lean protein, and whole grain intake. Don’t smoke and limit salt and saturated fat. It’s also vital to properly manage stress.

Dr. Gota helps you achieve and maintain your target body weight virtually. She follows up with you periodically to ensure your treatment plan works effectively.
